A mortgage network is an organisation that is directly authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

The network is responsible for following the rules and regulations laid out by the FCA and puts systems and processes in place to ensure that its members stay within those rules. The network acts as a regulatory umbrella for its members.

An Appointed Representative (AR) is a person or firm who acts as an agent of a directly authorised organisation (such as a mortgage network) to carry out regulated activity (such as giving mortgage advice).

When you join a mortgage network, you become an Appointed Representative of that network. The network is responsible for following the rules and regulations laid out by the FCA and puts systems and processes in place to ensure that its members stay within those rules. The network acts as a regulatory umbrella for its members.

An Appointed Representative (AR) belongs to a network, so it is the network’s responsibility to ensure that the AR adheres to the FCA’s regulations.

They will do this by having a compliance regime in place, providing updates about rule changes and training where necessary, and by having systems and processes that make sure regulations are followed.

This takes the burden of keeping on top of regulatory changes away from the AR, allowing them to concentrate on helping clients and writing business.

Being directly authorised means that an individual or firm is directly authorised to carry out regulated activity by the FCA. A person or firm who is directly authorised does not belong to a network.

If you’re looking to launch your own mortgage advisory business while benefiting from the backing of an experienced network, we’re here to equip you with all the tools for success. From regulatory support and promotional resources to access to suitable mortgage products, we’ll ensure you start your journey with confidence.

Yes, you can – but how and when you do it will depend on your arrangement with your current network and any contractual obligations you might have. Schedule a call with a Network Support Manager, and we can discuss your specific situation and give you guidance.

Once you’ve scheduled a call, we’ll talk through our proposition, discuss your plans, give you some advice and answer any questions you might have.

If you’re happy, we’ll send you some more information and the commercial offer. We’ll arrange another call back to discuss things, once you’ve had time to read through everything.

If you’re still happy, we’ll send out the application pack. This includes the application form, the FCA Form A and a request for supporting documentation such as your business plan and cash flow projection.

Don’t worry if you haven’t come across these documents before – we’ll send you guidance and some helpful tips on how to complete them. While you’re completing the application pack, we’ll carry out some initial due diligence checks, such as a soft credit search.

Once we’ve received your application pack, we’ll review it and carry out further due diligence, such as a full credit report, and request proof of identification and address, proof of CeMAP qualification, and business bank statements.

If everything is satisfactory, we’ll make you a formal offer to join The Dragon Network and send you the contract. Once the contract has been signed and returned, we’ll carry out a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and submit your application for FCA authorisation.

Once you’ve been approved by the FCA, we’ll set up your mortgage and protection agencies, and then schedule your onboarding and training.

Training is delivered online, via the Dragon academy, which means you can attend sessions in the comfort of your own home and from anywhere in the country as long as you have an internet connection.

The training is a combination of recorded webinars and live sessions, consisting of role plays, case studies and assessments and covers topics such as our systems and processes, regulatory knowledge, product knowledge, the advice process and client-facing skills.

You’ll be assigned a dedicated Network Support Manager who will guide and support you through the process from start to finish.

You can normally expect to begin trading as an Appointed Representative of The Dragon Network within 8 – 12 weeks from your initial enquiry.

We’d be more than happy to talk with you about joining Dragon Network and can give you some guidance and advice on how to prepare to join the network.

Just schedule a call with a Network Support Manager to discuss your circumstances in more detail.

Yes, we’d want you to hold the full CeMAP qualification, or equivalent.

If you do not currently have CeMAP, or are wondering where to start, we can point you in the right direction and recommend a training provider.

Just fill out our contact form or give us a call and one of our Network Support Managers will be in touch.
